On June 13, 2020, Calgary was hit by a vicious hailstorm. This storm caused $1.2 billion dollars in damage, making it the fourth most costly natural disaster in Canadian history

Hailstorms can cause disastrous damage.

The most important thing to do before and during a hailstorm? Keep yourself, your family, and your property safe. Once the hailstorm has passed and the sky is clear, you’ll have to assess the damage. Let’s look at 3 of the most important things you can do after a hailstorm:

#1 Document everything

First, jot down when the storm happened, and how long it lasted, as well as any steps you took to protect your property from damage. Then, go outside and survey your property. Look for any obvious signs of damage, and write down what the damage is. If there’s serious damage that needs to be repaired right away, call a contractor as soon as possible.

#2 Get a roof inspection

Even if you don’t see any obvious damage to your roof, you should get a roof inspection. It can be hard to spot shingles that have been cracked or taken out entirely. You’ll also want someone to check your roof’s flashing, as well as look for any damage around protrusions like vent stacks.

Unfortunately, there are scammers out there who will take advantage of hailstorms to offer “free” roof inspections – they’ll use these inspections as an excuse to find “damage”,  get you to sign a contract, and then take your money without doing any real work. These scammers will often knock on your door after a storm to offer an inspection.

Some door-to-door roof inspections aren’t scams – just be careful. Look up the roofing company on the Better Business Bureau, Yelp, Google, or wherever else you find your reviews. Contact the company, and make sure the people at your door are who they claim to be.

#3: Get repairs

Now that your roof has been inspected, you can get it repaired (if need be). You should also take this time to repair any of the less pressing damage caused by the hail, like dents in your siding. Because you’ve been documenting everything carefully from the start, it should make claiming the cost of repairs with your insurance company easier – if you opt to claim.

At Martens Roofing Contracting, we offer shingle replacement in Calgary. We’ve dealt with more than our fair share of post-hailstorm repairs. We can even advise you on some of our favourite impact-resistant shingles; they might not completely stop damage from hailstorms, but they can definitely help decrease it.
