Why It Is Important To Keep Your Roof Clean During The Rainy Season

There are a lot of things in this world that can seem counterintuitive. Did you know that you shouldn’t brush your teeth immediately after eating? Strange, but true. In the same vein, did you know that the rainy season may be the most important time to clean your roof?

You’d think the opposite would be true. After all, shouldn’t rain wash off all the debris and other unwanted gunk off your roof?

Unfortunately, rain often brings more problems than it cleans off. Rain is almost always accompanied by wind, and during a rainstorm, you can end up with leaves, branches, dirt, spores, and all kinds of other things on your roof. The roof will be wet, which can encourage mould to grow. Add all this together, and it’s easier to see why getting a professional to clean your roof during the rainy season is a good idea.

Let’s look at some of the other benefits of roof cleanings during the rainy season:

Clean gutters protect your foundation

Without gutters, water would fall directly from your roof toward your home’s foundation. From there, stagnant water would pool, eventually finding its way into your home.

Having clogged gutters is basically as bad as having no gutters at all. Water will pool in your gutters, with nowhere to go, until it reaches the top of your gutters and starts flowing over the side.

By cleaning your roof regularly, you’ll reduce the chances of debris, leaves, and other matter falling into your gutters. You should also clean your gutters out regularly – even if your roof is almost spotless, gunk can still work its way into your gutters.

A clean roof means no stagnant water

When there are objects on your roof – be they branches, leaves, or some other debris – they can block the flow of water. That can lead to stagnant water on your roof which, inevitably, ends with water leaking into your home. Getting your roof cleaned in the rainy season, especially after a major storm, can help reduce the risk of water damage to your home (which your insurance may or may not cover).

You can identify problems with your roof

Getting your roof cleaned means finding potential hazards. You might, for example, notice there are a lot of branches on your roof. This could be a sign that you need to trim the branches of your tree (or ask your neighbour to trim theirs). If you’ve hired a technician to clean your roof, they might notice damaged or missing shingles – and they’ll be able to tell you about them. You can then have the damage repaired before the next rainstorm. By doing so, you’ll decrease your risk of more extensive roof damage.
