What is vinyl siding?
Vinyl siding is mostly made of PVC - the same stuff that’s used in many plumbing systems. PVC is valued for its durability, and vinyl siding is no exception.
While vinyl siding was created in the 1950s, it was only in the ‘60s and ‘70s that it began to grow in popularity. Today, it’s one of the most used types of siding in North America, due to its many benefits - which we’ll discuss shortly.
There are non-PVC components to vinyl siding, too. Most of them are used to impart colour and texture, but some are used to increase durability, flexibility, impact resistance, and other desirable qualities.
The vinyl siding of today is not the same stuff they used in the ‘70s - or even the ‘90s, for that matter. It’s much better. Manufacturers have improved the techniques and materials used to create the siding. We’re happy to offer some of the highest quality vinyl siding on the market today.
What are the benefits of vinyl siding?
There’s a reason vinyl siding is so popular: it has several benefits for home and business owners alike.
Vinyl siding is affordable
For starters, it’s incredibly affordable - in most cases, it’s the least expensive form of siding available. Affordable can mean “cheap”, but that’s not the case with the siding you’ll get with Martens.
While our vinyl siding is affordable, it’s also beautiful, durable, easy to maintain, and so much more.
Vinyl siding is durable
Our vinyl siding is incredibly durable - it’s weatherproof, heat-resistant, impact-resistant, and more. This siding is built for Calgary - it can stand up to the gale force winds, hailstorms, and blizzards our city has to offer.
Our siding also has an incredible lifespan - 25 to 50 years with proper maintenance. We handle repairs as well as installation, so if your siding is ever damaged, we’ll be able to help.
Vinyl siding is easy to maintain
Maintenance for vinyl siding is incredibly simple, too. All you need to do is wipe down your siding with a mixture of 30% vinegar to 70% water anytime you see mould, mildew, or other buildup.
Other than that, our vinyl siding is practically maintenance free. That makes it an excellent option for business owners who want to keep maintenance costs low, and homeowners who want to limit their housework.
The colour of vinyl siding may fade over time, but new additives in the higher quality vinyls we offer can limit fading. You probably won’t see any fading for decades, which means you’ll rarely (if ever) have to paint your siding.
Vinyl siding is versatile
With new manufacturing methods, vinyl siding can be made to look like almost anything. Homeowners who have always wanted wood siding can get vinyl siding that looks like wood, without the great effort and cost. Many other patterns and colours are available, too.
One of the benefits of this versatility is that vinyl siding can be installed practically anywhere - so whether you have a residential or commercial property, our vinyl siding will be perfect for you!
How is vinyl siding installed?
You know how the weather is in Calgary - if you don’t like it, wait 5 minutes. Vinyl siding expands and contracts with temperature fluctuations, so we always install our vinyl with these movements in mind.
We use a rail from which the siding is hung. The nails in the rail can slide back and forth in the nail hole, allowing for some shifting. These shifts will rarely (if ever) be noticeable to the naked eye. This style of installation stops the vinyl from cracking when it shifts.
Don’t try to install vinyl siding alone! You have to be careful around corners, windows, and more. If it’s installed incorrectly, it can crack due to shifts. It also may not cover your whole home - if water can leak past your siding, you might as well not have any siding at all!
